What we won't compromise on

Waterproofing first. A shower without a proper pan, vapor barrier, and slope to drain will fail within a few years even if it looks fine on day one. We use tested systems on every shower we build.

Schluter Kerdi membrane or RedGard liquid-applied waterproofing
Properly built shower pan with correct slope to drain
Tile installation that doesn't shortcut at corners
Bath fans sized for the actual room volume, vented outside
Humidity-sensor or timer controls so the fan runs long enough

What we see behind the drywall in older Portland bathrooms

Most Portland-area bathrooms we work on were built between 1900 and the 1990s. The bones are typically good. Behind the drywall there's a predictable list:

Galvanized supply lines reaching end of service life
Cast iron drains in marginal condition
Original electrical, often without GFCI protection
Subfloor rot from a slow leak nobody noticed
Vent fan that exhausts into the attic instead of outside
Tile installed without a vapor barrier, slowly failing

Bathroom remodel FAQs

Can we use the bathroom while you work?

For most bath remodels, no: the bath is offline for the duration of active work. If it's your only bathroom, we sequence demo and rough-in tightly to minimize the offline window, and we'll talk through whether a portable solution makes sense.

Tile-in shower or one-piece insert?

For a remodel, a properly built tile-in shower with a waterproofing membrane is more durable, more beautiful, and adds more value than a one-piece insert. Inserts have their place (rental properties, second baths on a tight budget), but for an owner-occupied primary or hall bath we usually recommend custom tile.

What finishes hold up best in Portland's wet climate?

Porcelain tile floors, large-format porcelain or sealed natural stone walls in showers, quartz countertops, and metal hardware. Avoid bargain ceramic on shower floors (cracks under thermal stress) and untreated travertine (etches with anything acidic).

How long will a bath remodel take?

A standard hall bath runs 3 to 5 weeks of active work. A primary bath with a custom shower and significant layout changes runs 5 to 8 weeks. Tile lead times can add 2 to 6 weeks at the front end if specifying a backordered product.
